چکیده

We investigate large Rayleigh number (10– 10) and large Prandtl number (10– 10) thermal convection in glycerol in an aspect ration one cubic cell. The kinematic viscosity of the fluid strongly depends upon the temperature. The symmetry between the top and bottom boundary layers is thus broken, the so-called non-Boussinesq regime. In a previous paper Wu and Libchaber have proposed that in such a state the two thermal boundary layers adjust their length scales so that the mean hot and cold temperature fluctuations are equal in the center of the cell. We confirm this equality. A simplified two-dimensional model for the mean center temperature based on an equation for the thermal boundary layer is presented and compared with the experimental results. The conclusion is that the central temperature adjusts itself so that heat fluxes from boundaries are equal, temperature fluctuations at the center symmetrical, at a cost of very different temperature drops and Rayleigh number for each boundary. © 1997 American Institute of Physics. @S1070-6631~97!00604-1#

The 1: 2 Mode Interaction in Rayleigh-BéNard convection with Weakly Broken midplane Symmetry

The effects of weak breaking of the midplane reflection symmetry on the 1:2 steady state mode interaction in Rayleigh–Bénard convection are discussed in a PDE setting. Effects of this type arise from the inclusion of non-Boussinesq terms or due to small differences in the boundary conditions at the top and bottom of the convecting layer. The latter provides the simplest realization, and capture...

Non-Oberbeck-Boussinesq effects in two-dimensional Rayleigh- Bénard convection in glycerol

We numerically analyze Non-Oberbeck-Boussinesq (NOB) effects in two-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard flow in glycerol, which shows a dramatic change in the viscosity with temperature. The results are presented both as functions of the Rayleigh number Ra up to 10 (for fixed temperature difference ∆ between the top and bottom plates) and as functions of ∆ (“nonOberbeck-Boussinesqness” or “NOBness”) up...

Equatorial Symmetry of Chaotic Solutions in Boussinesq Convection in a Rotating Spherical Shell

We investigate properties of convective solutions of the Boussinesq thermal convection in a moderately rotating spherical shell allowing the inner and outer sphere rotation due to the viscous torque of the fluid. The ratio of the inner and outer radii of the spheres, the Prandtl number and the Taylor number are fixed to 0.4, 1 and 500, respectively. The inertial moments of the inner and outer s...

Specific roles of fluid properties in non-Boussinesq thermal convection at the Rayleigh number of 2× 10

We demonstrate the specific non-Boussinesq roles played by various fluid properties in thermal convection by allowing each of them to possess, one at a time, a temperature dependence that could be either positive or negative. The negative temperature dependence of the coefficient of thermal expansion hinders effective thermal convection and reduces the Nusselt number, whereas the negative depen...

Non-Oberbeck-Boussinesq effects in turbulent thermal convection in ethane close to the critical point.

As shown in earlier work [Ahlers, J. Fluid Mech. 569, 409 (2006)], non-Oberbeck-Boussinesq (NOB) corrections to the center temperature in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in water and also in glycerol are governed by the temperature dependences of the kinematic viscosity and the thermal diffusion coefficient. If the working fluid is ethane close to the critical point, the origin of non-Ober...
